What is Sunscreen?

Sunscreen is a cosmetic product which protects us from UV rays. UV rays are ultraviolet rays which can cause damages to our skin. Those damages can be as severe as skin cancer and as acute as tanning, sunburn, pigmentation, etc. These UV rays come from sunlight. There are 2 types of UV rays – UVA and UVB.

Common Ingredients used

The common ingredients used in a sunscreen are (Physical blockers) zinc oxide, titanium oxide, etc. these chemicals can make your skin look white. So it is very important to let sunscreen absorbed in your skin so as it will look like your normal skin. Sunscreens physically block the skin from the harmful rays of the sun. Zinc oxide blocks both UVA and UVB. Not all sunscreen can provide you protection from both UVA and UVB. Those sunscreens which protect from UVA and UVB rays are known as broad spectrum sunscreen.

The higher the concentration of ingredients, the more effective is the sunscreen. Some people even prefer to use tinted sunscreen which matches their skin tone.

But the problem with sunscreen is that people do not apply enough of it which ultimately can cause unwanted sunburns, tannings, etc. even after applying sunscreen.

How to get the Enough Protection

To get enough protection, we should use 2 milligrams of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin which is equivalent to two tablespoons of sunscreen to the exposed areas of face and body. One should apply the 20mg of sunscreen. Only then it will be effective of its most.

For example, if you will apply sunscreen having SPF 15, and you are not applying enough of it. For SPF 15 it would be effective for about SPF 7 only. Hence applying enough sunscreen on our body is very important.

You may have heard about the fact that a person must reapply sunscreen after every 2 hours.

After entering in daylight for 10 minutes, one tends to get tanned. In many countries, people take sunbath without being aware of the fact that these UV rays are damaging its skin.

If you will use sunscreen too much, you will end up looking greasy and a sticky mess and too little of it will not protect you from the harmful rays. But before using any sunscreen check for its expiry date.

So in simple language, I must say you should use 1/3 to ½ of a teaspoon of sunscreen and apply it to your whole face and neck.

For the whole body, you should use about a regular glass shot, which is 1.5 ounces of sunscreen used for your whole face and body. Applying a little extra won’t harm you.

Make sure that you are reapplying the sunscreen after every 90 minutes. And if you are swimming or sweat immediately after that.

Another easy way to estimate how much sunscreen to use, think about coins and use blobs of sunscreen equivalent in size. So now use 5p  sized for your nose, 5p  for the hairline. 10p for the forehead, 10p for each side of the face.

Diameter for 5p coin is 18mm
Diameter for 50p coin is 27.3mm
Diameter for 10p coin is 24.5mm

How much Sunscreen to Use on the body?

I Know it is very confusing when it comes to how much sunscreen each body part requires. So to solve this problem there is a coin trick. To get enough protection what we need to do is use at least 2mg of sunscreen for each square centimeter of skin.

On back

On the back, we should apply sunscreen in about area equivalent to two 50p sized blobs for your whole back.

On Stomach

It requires sunscreen of about one 10 p blob for an ideal coverage.

If your stomach area is exposed for a longer duration you will need to reapply it after every two hours.

On chest

The chest area is more often exposed so it requires as much quantity as your back requires. So to measure this use 50 p blob for ideal coverage.

On Shoulders

It is one of the first areas to get burned so they should be most protected.

So you will require two 10 p blobs for each shoulder and try to cover your hands with a light shirt for better protection if you are exposed to the sun.

On Arms

It requires one 10 p blob for better coverage for each upper and lower arm. So it will require four 10 p blobs in all.

On Legs

This is the most forgettable area. It requires about one 10 coin for each lower and upper part of legs. Means four 10 p coin for both the legs in total.

How much Sunscreen to Use on Face?

On Nose

It will require 5p sized blob for the whole nose.

On Forehead and Neck

It is the most forgettable area. You often apply sunscreen on the cheek and forget about the forehead and especially neck. Use one 10 p blob to cover these areas.

On Face and Ear

The rest of the face requires about one 10p sized blob of sunscreen. And again I am saying never forget about your ears. The SPF in the face creams and foundation don’t have enough of sunscreen protection so it is necessary to apply sunscreen underneath your face cream or foundation.
